"Of donuts and dumb celebrities" by Michelle Malkin
Recently there has been a lot of unnecessary hype in regards
to Rachel Ray’s wearing of a scarf in a Duncan Donuts ad. Apparently the scarf
that she choose to wear resembles a kaffiyeh, which is a traditional scarf worn
by Arab men.
Blogger Michelle Malkin posted a story regarding this ad in
which she referred to the attire as a “jihadi chic keffiyeh” and “hate
couture”. Ms. Malkin thinks that Rachel Ray is a terrorist or at least
promoting terrorist activities by wearing this scarf. Of course, Malkin fails
to understand jihad means "struggle”.
Even worse, Duncan Donuts decided to quickly pull the ad
stating “the possibility of misperception detracted from its original intention
to promote our iced coffee.” What a crock of shit. Many celebrities have worn
similar scarfs according to the All
the Rage Blog by Monica Corcoran but it was only until Ms. Malkin decided
to terrorize Duncan Donuts about it, did it become a problem.
My question is this. Where does it stop? Who makes the
decision to what is acceptable attire? Hopefully not people like Michelle
Malkin. Maybe the next time Ms. Malkin decides to wear something red, we can
accuse her of being in the “Bloods” gang! That sounds about as ridiculous as suggesting that Rachel Ray is
promoting terrorist activities for wearing a scarf.
I will give props to Ms. Malkin as she has
successfully scared Duncan Donuts into removing the ad but I have to say that
the PR people at Duncan missed a golden opportunity. It would have been nice if
someone had given her some “kind” words of advice and education.
